Vermeer in het Rijksmuseum

Details of View of Delft, 1659-61, Mauritshuis

To be seen during the Vermeer-exhibition in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam until June 4th 2023. Thirty years ago it was on display during a well-visited retrospective exhibition in the Mauritshhuis in The Hague.

Where will the next Vermeer-retrospective take place? In Vermeer’s hometown, Delft, thirty years from now? Visitors could meet on the quay like the above company and milkmaid with friend in Delft. How lovely that would be!

Strange speculations, I know, but why not? We will first celebrate the current exhibition in Amsterdam for sure!

Epilogue: Perhaps the art world needs to be released from its capitalist strains for another Vermeer-show to happen in the future at all. If that could be done, ha, more comtemporary artists would be able to focus on a creative life without financial strains, and show their work in museums when they are still alive!

Museum Prinsenhof in Delft and the Mauritshuis in The Hague are demonstrating from today (20-3-2023) how much fun that can be with twelve freshly painted “New Vermeers” by contemporary amateur and professional artists! On view until 4 June 2023!
